Your file stays on your device. Compression happens right here in your browser β€” your PDF is never uploaded to our servers, stored, or seen by anyone. See how we verify this →
This compressor works by re-saving each page as an optimized image, so it shrinks scan-heavy and image-heavy PDFs the most. Text will no longer be selectable in the result, and PDFs that are mostly plain text may not get smaller.

When to use it

A moderate setting is a good starting point for email and portal uploads. Stronger compression can reduce image clarity, especially in scans, screenshots and documents with small type.

Limits and checks

Compression results depend on what the PDF contains. Image-heavy scans usually shrink more than documents already optimised by another program. Always inspect signatures, fine print and diagrams.

Frequently asked questions

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?

No. This tool does all of its work with JavaScript running inside your own browser. Your file never leaves your device, which is why it's both fast and private.

Why is text no longer selectable after compressing?

To shrink the file, each page is re-saved as an optimized image. This is what makes big reductions possible on scanned and image-heavy PDFs, but it means the pages become pictures, so text can't be selected or searched in the compressed copy. Keep your original if you need selectable text.

My PDF didn't get smaller β€” why?

PDFs that are mostly plain text or vector graphics are already very compact, so turning them into images can keep them the same size or even make them larger. In that case, just keep your original file β€” it's already well optimized.

Which level should I choose?

Start with Balanced. Choose Strong when you need the smallest possible file (for email limits), or Light when image quality matters most.

Does it cost anything?

No β€” it's completely free with no sign-up, just like every WriteReady tool.

Which browsers are supported?

Any up-to-date version of Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or Safari on desktop or mobile.
