Your file stays on your device. The password is applied right here in your browser — your PDF is never uploaded to our servers, stored, or seen by anyone. See how we verify this →
Keep your password somewhere safe — a lost password cannot be recovered, and no one (including us) can open the file without it. If your PDF is already password-protected, remove its existing password before adding a new one.

When to password-protect a PDF

When to use it

Add a password before emailing or sharing anything sensitive — bank statements, contracts, medical or ID documents, payslips. The recipient enters the password to open it, so a forwarded or intercepted copy stays unreadable without it.

Good to know

The file is locked with AES-256, the same standard used for strong document encryption. The password can't be recovered if lost, so store it safely and share it separately from the file (for example by text or in person), never in the same email.

Frequently asked questions

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?

No. The password and encryption are applied by code running inside your own browser. Your file and your password never leave your device, which is why it's both fast and private.

What kind of protection is added?

The PDF is encrypted with AES-256 and given a password that's required to open it. Anyone who opens the file — in any PDF reader — will be asked for the password first.

What happens if I forget the password?

It can't be recovered. The encryption is real, so there's no back door — not for you, and not for us. Always keep a copy of your original file and store the password somewhere safe.

Can I remove the password again later?

Yes, in any PDF reader that lets you open the file with the password and re-save it without one. This tool only adds a password; it doesn't remove existing ones.

My PDF is already password-protected — can I use this?

Not directly. Open it in a PDF reader with its current password and save an unprotected copy first, then add a new password here.

Does it cost anything?

No — it's completely free with no sign-up, just like every WriteReady tool.

Which browsers are supported?

Any up-to-date version of Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or Safari on desktop or mobile.
