JPG or PDF: Which Format Should You Use?

Compare JPG images and PDF documents so you can choose the right format for photos, forms, scans and sharing.

Choose based on the job

JPG is an image format. It is compact and widely supported, making it suitable for photographs. PDF is a document container that can hold multiple pages, text, images, forms and consistent page dimensions. Neither is universally better—the right choice depends on what the recipient needs.

When JPG makes sense

Use JPG for a single photograph, a web image or a quick visual preview. It usually produces smaller photographic files than lossless image formats, but repeated saving can reduce quality. JPG also does not naturally represent a multi-page document.

When PDF makes sense

Use PDF for applications, receipts, portfolios, signed forms and any set of pages that should stay together in a defined order. A PDF is often easier to print and less likely to be displayed as a loose collection of attachments.

Turning photos into a useful PDF

Crop and rotate each image before conversion, arrange pages in reading order, and select a page size appropriate for the destination. Inspect the result for sideways pages, large blank borders and unreadable detail. Keep the original photos if they may be needed later at full resolution.
