Why file order matters
A merged PDF becomes one continuous document. Before combining files, decide the reading order and rename inputs clearly—for example, 01-cover, 02-application and 03-evidence. This prevents a supporting page from appearing before the form it belongs to.
A privacy-conscious workflow
- Collect only the files that belong in the final document.
- Remove duplicate or irrelevant pages first.
- Arrange the PDFs in the correct order inside the merger.
- Create the combined file locally.
- Open the result and check the first and last page of every source document.
Check more than page count
Confirm page orientation, readable scans, bookmarks if they matter, and whether forms or annotations survived the merge. Password-protected or damaged PDFs may need attention before they can be combined. Never delete the source files until the merged copy has been accepted.
Use a meaningful filename
A filename such as “application-jordan-lee-2026-09.pdf” is easier for both sender and recipient than “merged-final-2.pdf”. Avoid placing sensitive identifiers in the filename when it will travel through systems where filenames are widely visible.
